Background to the campaign

This is a map of Spanish Florida during the 1700s

Florida had been a colony of Spain for hundreds of years by the point of the 1700s. However it was during the 1700s that Spain wanted to fortify some of its colonies due to its failing empire. Starting in 1702 the Spanish started paying closer attention to its colonies especially with recent hostilities with Britain. Spanish soldiers were trained to primarily take up defensive positions as they did not have overwhelming numbers in Florida. Overall the Spanish army in America was commanded by a representative named the Viceroy of New Spain. This Viceroy resided in Mexico City. Over the course of the 1700s, Spanish armies in Florida and North America in general started actually organizing their militaries. Up until this point, the soldiers in Florida were formed in independent companies. Starting truly in 1717 the Spanish army started forming into a legitimate army which would prepare them and lead up to their role in the American Revolution.
